The Days of Corruption

II - THE DAYS OF CORRUPTION

Individuals may die, but their contributions, their actions and ideas, can abide long after death. Major Zero and Big Boss (Naked Snake's new name) chose to embrace the ideals that The Boss held dear. Her willingness to sacrifice all for the protection of her country left a lasting impression, and led to the creation of The Patriots in the early 1970s. This elite organization, bankrolled by The Philosophers' Legacy and dedicated to the protection of the United States, originally consisted of six founding members: Major Zero (the group's senior figure), Big Boss, Ocelot, EVA, Sigint (later known as Donald Anderson) and Para-medic (alias Dr. Clark).

In order to ensure the supremacy of the United States, The Patriots envisaged a radical solution: a process of imposing the political, economic and social model of the US on the rest of the world. By standardizing other nations through subtle manipulation, nurturing facsimiles of their own cultural and political landscape, they believed that they might prevent future opposition or outside threat. In doing so, they misinterpreted (or, perhaps, simply lost sight of) the true passion behind the principles of the woman that inspired them: her belief in individual liberty, which underpinned her desire to defend her nation at all costs, even at the expense of her own life. Where The Boss might have led by example, The Patriots (and particularly Zero) increasingly sought total control to achieve their ultimate goals; The ends, in their eyes would justify the means.

With the practically inexhaustible resources that The Philosophers' Legacy put at their disposal, the influence of The Patriots grew as banks, foundations, corporations and, indeed, governments came to rely on their investments. With the iconic Big Boss promoted as a living legend, helping to guide the opinions of the masses and the rich and powerful alike, The Patriots began to shape the development of the world's political and social landscape. As the organization's power grew, so too did the disillusionment of Big Boss, who felt manipulated and exploited by Zero, and repulsed by his methods.

Realizing the growing distance between the two friends, Zero secretly launched the "Les Enfants Terribles" project. Through the expertise of Dr. Clark (alias Para-Medic), an egg donation from her Japanese assistant, and with EVA acting as a surrogate mother, three clones of Big Boss were created in utmost secrecy: Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and, later, Solidus Snake. When Big Boss learnt of his betrayal, he came to realize that his friend attached little, if any significance to the founding principles of The Patriots, and that his thirst for power would eventually suffocate all freedom in the world.

The estrangement of the two friends was now complete. Where Major Zero dreamt of solely of control over minds and information, Big Boss began to obsess over freedom; A total, anarchic, furious freedom; The drastic removal of all constraints and rules, an open and permanent battlefield where men could let their impulses and desires flow recklessly. Zero desired total order, and Big Boss the very antithesis: total chaos, extremes of individual liberty.

Big Boss left The Patriots and disappeared for several years, enabling Zero to consolidate his power and influence. The games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake tell the story of how Big Boss (assisted by Frank Jaeger, alias Gray Fox) seized control of two [fictional] nations with an army of mercenaries - first Outer Heaven, and later Zanzibarland. On both occasions, Big Boss would be foiled by Solid Snake, his son (or, to be more precise, clone - though this was not clear to Snake at the time). Despite being unaware of their existence, Solid Snake unwittingly acted as a tool of The Patriots - and, specifically, Zero. Once Snake completed his mission in Zanzibarland, The Patriots secretly retrieved the bodies of Big Boss and Gray Fox. The former was kept in a state of perpetual coma; Gray Fox was made a test subject for experimental body enhancement surgery, eventually becoming the Cyborg Ninja.

For Zero, the perceived betrayal of his friend heightened his contempt for humanity. Rather than hand control of the organization to a subsequent generation of secret governors, he instead chose to initiate the development of a computerized system that would, ultimately, manage world affairs in accordance with his beliefs: in particular, his belief that society could only function through uniformity with restricted individual will.

The Boss's deeply human ideals of freedom and personal commitment were therefore profaned, neglected under Major Zero's command until they degenerated into a perverted and pathological obsession with control and order, a fear of unanticipated innovation or initiative, and a belief in the power of enforced conformity to engender perpetual, manageable repetition. Naturally, such an appalling betrayal of The Boss's legacy could not go unchallenged.

The Days of Ideals

Ok guys, so I got in the mail today the Collector's Edition Strategy Guide for the upcoming hit Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Instead of continuing what I started by writing about the story of each individual game in order of release and then typing up a bio of each main character up to said game, I'll be typing up word for word the whole Metal Gear Synopsis from the guide.

WARNING!!!! CONTAINS SPOILERS TO METAL GEAR SOLID 4!!! DO NOT CONTINUE UNLESS YOU HAVE BEATEN THE GAME OR YOU WILL HAVE RUINED A GREAT STORY!!!!

I - THE DAYS OF IDEALS

The starting point of the Metal Gear saga, the creation of The Philosophers, occurred during the early 1900s. This unique and deeply secretive organization was established by a select group of eminent figures from the three countries that were to dominate the century that lay ahead: the United States, Russia and China. Together, these individuals gathered a practically boundless sum of funds, known as The Philosophers' Legacy, that they believed would be sufficient to win any present or future world conflict. Those who wield the resources to wage war also possess the means to prevent it, and The Philosophers sought to achieve this noble goal by using their incredible resources and powerful influence to steer world history away from brutal, needless warfare. However, with time and the death of its founding members, the raison d'être of this clandestine committee was gradually corrupted; The Philosophers' philosophy was not passed on to posterity. In the confusion and chaos that ensued after the Second World War, the USSR - or, more precisely, an individual named Colonel Volgin - recovered and gained sole possession of The Philosophers' Legacy.

Much of the story behind Metal Gear Solid 3 (the first episode in the chronology of the series) concerns the fight between the three countries that created The Philosophers' Legacy to claim it for themselves. During the Cold War, the growing nuclear arsenals possessed by the US and USSR led both nations to adhere to a doctrine of mutual assured destruction - the fact that a strike by one nation would lead the other to retaliate with equal or greater force. With a full-scale ground war deemed impractical (and, moreover, a catalyst for the inevitably lethal escalation that would surely follow), and any potential nuclear strike certain to trigger "launch on warning" (or "fail deadly") systems, both sides instead engaged in proxy battles on both actual and ideological battlefields. The events of Metal Gear Solid 3 take place in 1964 following the Cuban Missile Crisis, a breakdown in diplomacy that brought both nations closer to Armageddon than ever before or since.

An American agent (Naked Snake) is sent in to Soviet territory by the US secret services to facilitate the defection of a scientist (Nikolai Sokolov) who is poised to finalize the creation of a weapon so powerful that it could disrupt the delicate balance that prevents nuclear warfare between the two superpowers. To accomplish his mission, Naked Snake has the support of a remote team that includes his commander (Major Zero), a medical adviser (Para-Medic), an expert in technology and intelligence (Sigint), and his former mentor, a legendary female warrior known, with due reverence, as The Boss.

A master in the arts of infiltration and survival techniques, Naked Snake succeeds in making contact with Sokolov. When attempting to escape, however, they are confronted by The Boss, who, against all odds, chooses to join forces with Colonel Volgin, and provides him with two US-made portable nuclear warheads as a token of her sincerity. Volgin, in possession of The Philosophers' Legacy and aided by The Boss and Ocelot (a young prodigy of the Russian military), plans to overthrow Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's government and use the Shagohod weapon created by Sokolov to enable the USSR to win the Cold War. In a distinctly one-sided fight, The Boss seriously injures Naked Snake and leaves him near death. Volgin and his allies then leave with Sokolov in order to force him to complete his invention. Gravely wounded, Naked Snake witnesses the explosion of the research center where the Shagohod was developed when Volgin activates one of the two nuclear devices.

As Naked Snake is convalescing in hospital in the week following his rescue and extraction, the President of the United States receives a call from Soviet Premier Khrushchev. Aware that the destruction of the research center was caused by an American bomb, Khrushchev demands that they make amends by eliminating Volgin who, being an ally of his political rival Leonid Brezhnev, he regards as a dangerous adversary. Major Zero and Naked Snake are given the opportunity to find redemption for their earlier failure by helping to avert a major global crisis. The objective of their mission (dubbed "Snake Eater") is to retrieve Sokolov, destroy the Shagohod, and execute Volgin and The Boss.

Naked Snake is sent back to Soviet territory, where he is told to expect the assistance of two local agents, Adam and EVA. On arrival, he finds EVA - but not a trace of Adam. A CIA mole operating within Volgin's organization, EVA reveals where Sokolov is detained. Naked Snake eventually succeeds in destroying the Shagohod and killing Volgin after a protracted and spectacular battle. One last task then awaits Naked Snake: to fulfill his mission, he must bring down his mentor, his spiritual mother, his former lover, The Boss. As they stand poised to fight she talks of her life, and relates many of the numerous sacrifices she has made as a soldier. Naked Snake battles with his emotions and wins the duel to the death, and is given the microfilm containing the access codes to The Philosophers' Legacy just before The Boss dies. Naked Snake then escapes with EVA, who steals the microfilm as he sleeps. In the message she leaves behind, it is revealed that EVA was actually an agent of the Chinese government, tasked with the responsibility of gaining control of the Legacy for her country.

The closing moments of Metal Gear Solid 3 provide answers to many questions. It appears that the defection of The Boss was a huge deception to enable her to approach Volgin and retrieve the Philosophers' Legacy. Her final duty was to accept her role as a traitor to the last, and die at the hands of her apprentice in order to conceal her true mission. For killing The Boss, Naked Snake is promoted to the rank of living legend, Big Boss, and is entrusted with the command of the elite FOXHOUND unit. It also becomes clear that EVA (having served the United States, Volgin and, ultimately, China) was not unique in her status as a triple agent. In a startling twist, it is revealed that Ocelot was actually working for the United States government, despite his involvement with the two Soviet factions in the story. The microfilm he left for EVA to steal was a fake; the genuine article is returned to the US.

The events of Metal Gear Solid 3, as we learn during its denouement, are all due to a complex yet slickly executed series of maneuvers devised to retrieve The Philosophers' Legacy from the clutches of Volgin. The Boss irrevocably tarnishes her reputation by defecting in order to infiltrate Volgin's organization, her gift of two nuclear warheads an irredeemable act of treason, a point of no return; The clinically brutal (yet, as we understand with hindsight, subtly restrained) humiliation of her protégé in their first battle underlines her apparent dedication to Volgin's cause. Volgin's use of one of the two miniature nukes to destroy Sokolov's research centre leads to a rabid chain of events that enables the US Government to return Naked Snake to Soviet soil to play his unique (and unwitting) role in the Byzantine ploy. Ocelot, loyal to the Americans (and, incidentally, the biological son of The Boss), is the contact that Naked Snake is supposed to meet (under the moniker "Adam"). However, Ocelot chooses to remain deep undercover, allowing the Chinese agent EVA (ostensibly a second American spy, but in truth attempting to gain control of the Philosophers' Legacy for her country) to greet him instead.

For Volgin, the defection of The Boss was to be the final ingredient in his plan to overthrow Khrushchev and employ Sokolv's Shagohod weapons platform to gain a decisive advantage in the Cold War. Ironically, he simply succeeded in introducing another enemy agent to his ranks, and instigated his own downfall. The Boss and Ocelot were loyal to the United States, and EVA to China; As for Sokolov, he would hate to see his weapon in the hands of the Colonel. The Boss and her son Ocelot cleverly steer events in the required direction, all the while knowing perfectly well the game each protagonist is playing. The Boss assists EVA because she knows the microfilm EVA seeks will ultimately prove to be a fake; She also "protects" her apprentice Naked Snake, as she intends for him to take over her role after her death. Ocelot, meanwhile, does his part to ensure that the Shagohod and Volgin are eliminated before he carries off the Philosophers' Legacy on behalf of the United States. In doing so, he additionally satisfies the agendas of Khrushchev (Volgin is dead), of Brezhnev (Khrushchev's position as Soviet Premier is weakened by the crisis, with Brezhnev his most likely successor) and, most pertinently, of the US (whose recovery of the Legacy is concealed in the aftermath).

The Boss was certainly the one who knew best what the whole incident had in store for her. A patriot to the very last, she chose to die for her country by assuming the mantle of traitor. Naked Snake understands her gesture and the significance of her sacrifice at the end of the adventure. His grief and disenchantment are heightened by the sheer perversity of his elevation to the rank of Big Boss by the superiors that so casually discarded his predecessor, the woman he worshiped above all others.

This was the price of The Boss's ideal, the cost of her commitment. She was ready to die for the way of life she freely chose, the expression of liberty that she lived for: love and loyalty to her country. It was this ideal that led to the birth of the infamous "Patriots".

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Four years after Operation Intrude N313, now 1999, the Cold War has been thawed out. Nuclear proliferation seems to possibly be a thing of the past. The development of new high-tech energy sources such as fusion power were thanks to a series of shocks to the oil market. Shocks such as how vehicles required oil for power. When oil reservations hit a new time low, the world was ready for drastic measures such as drilling into sand and shale fore more oil or by moving on to renewable fuels.

These steps were not needed when Dr. Kio Marv, a Czech scientist, had successfully bio-engineered a new species of algae that he called OILIX. OILIX could produce petroleum-grade hydrocarbons with little expense and effort. This algae was presented by the Dr. in Prague to the World Energy Conference when he was kidnapped on his way to the U.S. for a demonstration. It was soldiers from Zanzibar Land that did the kidnapping. It was discovered by NATO that the leaders of Zanzibar Land planned to hold the world hostage by controlling the supply of oil and some nuclear brinkmanship with a stockpile of nukes.

FOXHOUND's new commander, Roy Campbell, brought out of retirement Solid Snake. He was sent to Zanzibar Land to rescue Dr. Marv on a mission called Operation Intrude F014. During the mission Snake had help from the likes of Natasha Markova and Holly White. Markova was a former StB agent and was also Dr. Marv's personal bodyguard. Holly White however was posing as a journalist for the CIA. They helped guide him to finding and reuniting with Dr. Petrovich Madnar. Yes, the same guy who created Metal Gear TX-55 for Outer Heaven. He was kidnapped once more and forced by the soldiers of Zanzibar Land to create another Metal Gear tank...the Metal Gear D. Before Snake left that area, Madnar also informs him who is leading Zanzibar Land's uprising, his former commander, the legendary Big Boss. He apparently didn't die in the destruction of Outer Heaven. During his mission, an anonymous person gave hints to Snake on how to overcome certain obstacles and traps. The person didn't reveal himself until Snake reached the suspension bridge leading to the Detention Camp.

It was there that Metal Gear D fired a missile killing Natasha and causing the recapturing of Dr. Madnar. The driver of the Metal Gear revealed himself as the one to give out the hints and that he is...GRAY FOX~!~ Snake was determined even more to reach Dr. Madnar. He was able to single-handedly defeat Zanzibar Land's elite mercenary force. Those mercenaries were Black Ninja, Running Man, Red Blaster, Four Horsemen, Predator and Night Fright. Former Outer Heaven resistance leader Kyle Schneider was revealed to be the mercenary Black Ninja. After defeating them all, Snake reaches Dr. Marv's cell.

Once in, he just finds Marv's corpse and a petrified Dr. Madnar. He told Snake that Marv couldn't survive all the torture sessions and how he was unable to save Marv himself. Snake went to go collect the OILIX formula left by Marv when Holly reveals to Snake that Dr. Madnar was never captured...he was voluntarily overseeing the development of Metal Gear D! As soon as the news breaks, Madnar attacks Snake but was killed himself.

Snake grabbed the OILIX formula and on his way out he was confronted by Metal Gear D piloted by Gray Fox himself. Snake destroys the Metal Gear and confronted Gray Fox in a minefield. They fought using CQC until one was emerged the victor. That was Snake who then tossed Fox onto a mine and left him behind for dead as he continued on for one last battle with Big Boss. With no weapons, Snake improvised and made himself a flamethrower just with a cigarette lighter and a can of hairspray. It was this improvisement that helped him char Big Boss' body and kill him for good.

Snake and Holly met up and escaped together as the OILIX formula was handed to Campbell. Snake retired once more, this time disappearing to the Alaskan wilderness. He wouldn't be heard for a long time until another threat arrived.

Characters of Metal Gear

Solid Snake

Solid Snake is a man with not a lot known about him around 1995. He joined the military in 1991 and was inducted into the Green Berets where he was trained in the arts of CQC (Close Quarters Combat). As a Green Beret he joined FOXHOUND during the Gulf War just after an infiltration mission to western Iraq gone perfect. As all new recruits, his trainer in FOXHOUND was Master Miller.

Snake doesn't talk much about his childhood, only specifying that he was raised by more than one group of people and that his name since his childhood has been David. It's believed that he gained the codename of Solid Snake during the Green Berets.

It was Operation Intrude N313 that was his first mission for FOXHOUND. Just like his first mission with the Green Berets, this mission was an infiltration. This time it wasn't Iraq, it was the military nation led by a feared and legendary mercenary. The mercenary was revealed at the end of the mission to be Commander of FOXHOUND, Big Boss. The infiltration was bundled with a rescue mission as Operative Gray Fox was on a reconnaissance mission when they lost communication with him. Snake had to find and rescue his friend.

Snake entered Outer Heaven via river passage and while keeping in touch with Big Boss (with no idea he's behind Outer Heaven) he was able to skillfully pass guards and security measures before coming to Gray Fox. Fox told him the truth behind what's called Metal Gear; a bi-pedal, nuclear-equipped battle tank that could tip the balance of power in favor of Outer Heaven.

Snake was in awe learning all this. This whole time, Fox kept his cool and precise demeanor and attitude. Fox, was the highest ranking in FOXHOUND, and Gray Fox was the second to achieve it. Snake proceeded through the fortress and rescued prisoners as well as assist the local resistance cell fighters.

As he approached closer to the Metal Gear, things began to go wrong. All information from Big Boss was either poor or completely wrong. He was led into compromising and dangers situations left and right. Despite the slowdowns he was able to destroy Metal Gear and learn the truth behind Big Boss' sabotage. Big Boss met with Snake and wouldn't let him escape without a fight and they engaged in combat. Snake defeated Big Boss and the fortress fell apart as Snake left him behind for death to capture him. His mission was a success. Snake quit FOXHOUND afterwards and was recruited then by the CIA. He spent six months as a deep cover agent but was dissatisfied after a while and left that too. He was then a mercenary until he gained enough money to retire into Canada.

Gray Fox

Only little information is known about Gray Fox's childhood. He was born from German-American and Vietnamese parents. They both died during the Vietnam War while he was still a child and thus lived a grunting childhood. He was discriminated due to his half-Caucasian hertiage and was forced to work hard labor for the effort of the war. It was during his time in Mozambique that he was well known. Known for his cruel war tactics. He'd act with the frank-ness of a young boy and then trick enemies into letting their guard down as he would be allowed to kill them "with the ruthlessness of a hunter." This is where his nickname "The Frank Hunter" came from. Because of his ability to speak German, his fellow comrades gave him the name of "Frank Jaeger," (Jaeger is Hunter in German).

Big Boss found him during 1966 in Mozambique and they befriended each other. Big Boss didn't like seeing such a young child work in an anti-communist guerrilla group thus he took him and left him at a rehab center where he assumed he'd be safe.

Frank would later get into more trouble (with the CIA and FOX unit) and have to be saved once more by Big Boss. It was after this second rescue that he decided to join the armed forces and be a soldier for the Renamo during the Civil War of Mozambique. He was captured during a mission by Frelimo soldiers and was brutally tortured. Big Boss saved him for a third time just days later. Afterwards, Frank hit a time of depression and killed a couple in Rhodesia before discovering they had a child. Guilt built up inside and so he adopted the girl and named her Naomi and took care of her as if he was her older brother.

In 1988's Winter Olympic Games held in Calgary, Jaeger used the alias of Frank Hunter once again. During the Olympics he became romantically involved with Gustava Heffner, the Czech figure skating champion. As they tried to get married, the Czech and American authorities denied her any immigration rights and she was sent back to her home country after being stripped of her competition rights. This is what drove Jaeger to develop resentment for his superiors.

Frank used this emotion to join Big Boss' FOXHOUND unit around 1990. He was sought over due to being acquainted with Big Boss. It was due to his extraordinary soldiering skills that he was the only active field agent to receive the codename FOX; the highest commemoration given to any member of the unit.

Five years later he was assigned to Operation: Intrude N312. He was to gather data on a top-secret nuclear weapon that Outer Heaven was secretly developing. He was captured days later, only leaving one last message with the words "Metal Gear...". Fox was rescued during Operation: Intrude N313 by rookie Solid Snake and Fox told him all he knows about Metal Gear. It was his knowledge of the bi-pedal tank that helped Snake destroy Metal Gear TX-55.

After the destruction of Outer Heaven, Fox left FOXHOUND and disappeared with no trace.

Big Boss

Big Boss' real name is Jack. Jack's military career dates way back to 1950 where he joined the Green Berets became the legendary soldier, The Boss' apprentice. In 1956, Jack was involved in the Bikini Atoll testing of the hydrogen bomb. Jack learned everything about combat, weaponry, survival, espionage, destruction, psychology and foreign languages such as Russian from The Boss. These two together created CQC (Close Quarters Combat). The pair went their own ways on June 12th, 1959.

Jack fought alongside a guy by the codename of Python during the Vietnam War. Jack has stated that Python was one of the few soldiers he could completely rely on in battle. During a top secret mission, Python was shot and Jack left believing he was dead and re-joined the Green Berets where he was recruited by the newly formed FOX unit.

By the end of 1964, Jack retired from FOX and then participated in Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol with the teams of Green Berets and Army Rangers all as a part of the Vietnam Conflict. Here, is where he got the moniker of the "great legendary soldier." With the conflict over, Jack took part in over seventy missions as a part of many groups such as the SOG, the Wild Geese, and Delta Force. It was after these events he ran into Frank Jaeger in Mozambique and took him to an orphanage. Afterwards is when he finally found out that the Bikini Atoll tests made him sterile.

Metal Gear

Outer Heaven...a heavily fortified state founded in the late 1980's by the world's greatest soldier and most legendary mercenary. It was an established mercenary company that aimed to create and control wars. This was thought to have increased the sphere of a soldier's usefulness and soldiers would be provided by Outer Heaven. Outer Heaven was a huge fortress that was 200km north of Galzburg, South Africa.

Supposedly a weapon of mass destruction was being created within Outer Heaven and the western world got word of this around the year 1995. This is where FOXHOUND comes in.

FOXHOUND was a high-tech Special Forces unit commanded by the legendary soldier called Big Boss. The government ordered them to infiltrate Outer Heaven and Big Boss complied. He sent in Operative Gray Fox to asses the situation and neutralize whatever threat the weapon posed. His mission was called "Operation: Intrude N312." All was not well, for a few days contact with Gray Fox was lost. They only got one clue as to what happened and it was his last two words: "Metal Gear..."

This is what fueled the next mission called "Operation: Intrude N313." For this one, Big Boss decided to send in Rookie FOXHOUND operative Solid Snake. Infiltration was not easy or clean for that matter as he entered the area through its sewer system. He was able to find Gray Fox within the base eventially thanks to help by prisoner of wars (POWs) and resistance leader Kyle Schneider. Snake had no idea what a Metal Gear was or what it did until Gray Fox filled in the details. That it was a bi-pedal tank able to launch nuclear missiles from any kind of terrain. Snake was lucky to find out activation has not been done yet and it was being stored in the hangar. Gray Fox informed him of one last information and that was on who to find to know how to destroy the Metal Gear. Dr. Drago Petrovich Madnar, the creater of Metal Gear.

Outer Heaven being the home for many soldiers, had few key mercenaries that attempted to stop Snake in his path. The first two were Shotmaker and Machinegun Kid. They both fell to Snake's might as he continued on his path before having to disguise himself as an enemy officer to get into the Second Building. It was in the Second Building's basement that Dr. Madnar was at. Or, so Snake thought. ~!~ IT WAS A FAKE! The fake was a trap that Snake nimbly avoided. Confusion arose as his search continued as the mercenary Fire Trooper was the next to fall before Snake.

Another member of the resistance helped Snake finally find the real Dr. Madnar and even told him where to find a Rocket Launcher to defeat the two robotic TX-11's named the Bloody Brads. Two mercenaries that no gun could penetrate seemingly. These two machines were the guards to the area where Dr. Madnar was held.

Once freed, Madnar wouldn't tell Snake how to destroy the Metal Gear until Snake finds his daughter and brings her to him. So, snake had to get back to that basement with the trap in the Second Building. He was contacted by Diane, another resistance member, who helped Snake locate Ellen in the First Building's basement. He was able to use an underground tunnel that connected both buildings to reach her. She informed Snake that her father didn't create the Metal Gear on his own free will, he was forced!

Heading back to where he was before, Dr. Madnar tells Snake that the Metal Gear's model is called the TX-55 and that it's located on the 100th floor basement of the Third Building, and that he'd need Plastic Explosives set on it's feet in set order. Once in the Third Building, Snake is ambushed but slips past into the elevator.

Once at the basement door, Snake realizes he doesn't have the correct card key. But, thanks to Jennifer Snake finds he can blow up a wall to get an Oxygen Tank to go through a sewage duct to where the right card key is.

At the other side of the sewage ducts, the mercenary Coward Duck was waiting to challenge Snake. If Snake was to defeat him, he'll be able to get the card key he needs. Duck used boomerangs to attack Snake and for defense Duck used POWs. Snake just used his time and at the right opportunity he defeated Duck and rescued the POWs. One told Snake hes Jennifer's brother and that the ladder nearby would be needed to escape Outer Heaven.

Back at the 100th floor basement, Kyle Schneider contacted Snake on his CODEC and was going to let him know the truth behind Outer Heaven's leader. He was cutoff however before finishing. Confusion arose as Snake found another POW who was able to let Snake know of the truth Schneider attempted to tell: FOXHOUND commander and Outer Heaven's leader are one in the same...BIG BOSS!!!!!

Snake was devastated even as he made it to the Metal Gear's hangar. he planted the explosives as Madnar said and it was finally destroyed. Mission successful...as he thought! Outer Heaven's self destruct sequence was initiated and Snake was on a race to escape. The escape came short as the Legendary Soldier confronted Snake himself.

Snake then found out the truth behind his mission. He was a rookie, Big Boss never thought Snake would get this far and that with his failure comes false information to the public. But, he learned too much and by knowing what he knew, Snake has crushed Big Boss' ambitions. They battled to the end as the self-destruct sequence ticked down. Snake won the battle and quickly made his escape as he left Big Boss behind to his death.

Once finally out and the explosion behind him, HQ was informed of the destruction of Metal Gear and that "Operation Intrude N313 had been a success..."

Little did Snake know that this was just the beginning into the creation of his legacy. Stay tuned for the next post on the biographies of Solid Snake, Gray Fox, Big Boss and others up until after the events of Metal Gear and before Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

To start off...

This here marks the beginning of the end of the illustrious legacy of Solid Snake. His story began on the MSX2's Metal Gear made back in 1987 and is still continuing with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PlayStation 3, slated for a world wide release on June 12th, 2008.

The character of Solid Snake has spanned through five canon games; Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. He has also appeared in the non-canon games of Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge, Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, Metal Gear Ac!d, Metal Gear Ac!d 2 and the recently released Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Solid Snake also appeared in the re-releases of the solid games: Metal Gear Solid: Integral (VR Missions and Special Missions in North America and Europe respectively), Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. His cameo in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (and in Subsistence) is limited to the minigame of Snake VS Monkey.

My posts from here on out will be dedicated to giving a story overview on every game in the timeline of Metal Gear. Once the story overview of a certain game is over, I will post a biography of every major character in said game up to after that game. I will also update regularly on any new news I find. Thank you all, for following in this twenty-one year long journey of one of the most renowned franchises in video game history.
